Publications What Happens When Smallholder Farmers Access Finance? | Diane's Story from Rwanda

Diane, a smallholder farmer and fruit vendor in rural Rwanda, shares how she built a stable livelihood for her family through farming, savings, and access to financial services.

For Diane, progress doesn’t come from a single moment. It builds over time through learning, saving, and making consistent decisions. Opportunity International's AgFinance supports that process by helping her access financial tools, strengthen her participation in a savings group, and apply training directly to her farming activities. Each step reinforces the next, creating a system she can rely on.

As her savings grow and her access to credit improves, Diane invests more confidently in her farm and her household. She supports her children’s education, increases her productivity, and begins to plan beyond immediate needs. Her story reflects how financial inclusion, combined with practical training and group support, creates lasting change that starts at the household level and continues forward.
